Which cat is the hardest to get out?

Frederick — and it is not close. Every other puzzle in the apartment exists to put a pan of fried fish under his nose: wake the black cat, spill the yarn, dig out the remote, run the sink puzzle, feed the goldfish, heat the stove, aim the fan. Nothing about him can be skipped or shortcut.

Why is Geoffrey ranked second if he does everything?

Because he is a tool, not an obstacle: you ring the clock to wake him, flush the toilet to drag him around, squeak the mouse to scare him onto the counter. He touches more puzzles than any other cat, but none of them are his — he never has to be convinced twice for the same reason.

Do the other three cats do anything at all?

No. Pumpkin stays on the living room bookshelf, Baroness sits on the bedroom bed, Mr.Spock lies on the bathroom door frame — and all three walk out once the door is open and Frederick has jumped down. They are the reward for finishing the chain, not part of it.
